Traders are trained to reduce waste

The dealers of the Tarragona market received a visit yesterday from a couple of environmental educators who reminded them of the circuits they have at their disposal to recycle the waste they generate with their work, especially plastic.

The campaign is part of the European Week for Waste Prevention and is a joint action between Europe Direct Tarragona, the Ministry of Commerce and the municipal company of Mercados de Tarragona.

In addition to informing the merchants, 500 lots of reusable cloth bags of different formats will be distributed: for shopping, fruit and vegetables, and bread. The campaign will continue today and on Friday in Plaça Ponent and Avinguda Catalunya and on Thursday it will return to the market. Manel Castaño, councilor for Europe Direct Tarragona, explains that campaigns like this are important to reinforce good practices and recalled that the European Week for Waste Prevention (EWWR), born in 2009 as a LIFE+ project financed by the European Union, is the largest awareness campaign on waste prevention in Europe.

The presentation of the campaign was also attended by Marta Domènech, head of the Europe Direct Tarragona Office and the Councilor for Commerce, Didac Nadal, who recalled all the efforts that are being made in municipal markets to accompany merchants in the management of waste.
