The new era of the Tabacalera
La Tabacalera will reopen its doors this weekend with a high-level cultural program. It will do so after 17 years closed to the public, without activity –beyond that of the pigeons– and in constant decline. The City Council is conditioning the space, thoroughly cleaning a part of the equipment, and placing the signs that will mark which are the areas that can be visited. It seems that, from now on, the new era of the jewel in the crown begins. A stage in which cultural activities are expected to be scheduled throughout the year. La Tabacalera opens its doors with the intention of never closing again.
"Recovering the Tabacalera is a historical claim of the population, as well as an objective of the CUP when entering the municipal government," Inés Solé, Councilor for Culture, explained yesterday, who added that "now, with the machinery running, things will happen in here." Solé recognized the state of abandonment in which the property is located and assured that, with the conditioning tasks underway, "there are many City Council departments that are interested in doing things." the councilor cubaro He assured that "from now on, the public will be able to enjoy this jewel."
The starting signal will be tomorrow, with the first session of the En Dansa cycle, hand in hand with the shows formicaofrom the company La Im.perfecta, and Ying Yang, the balanceof the company Vols. The cycle already saw the light in summer, when the Tabacalera opened for the first time, as a tastet. "We saw that people were left wanting and we decided to repeat the experience," explained Cristina Reig, one of the technicians of the Escèniques team, from the Department of Culture. This time, the autumn-winter programming promises to have continuity, with another session of En Dansa, on December 3, with free enclavesfrom the company Evohé, and A travel to Paris, by Expans'Art Cia.
In addition, this same Saturday will also be inaugurated, in Module 6 of the Tabacalera, the exhibition Demonsa production of the experimental music group cabosenroque. This warehouse, which was used until the factory closed –in 2005–, has been conditioned in recent days with the aim of becoming a complementary space to the Mèdol-Centre d'Arts Contemporànies, which has its main headquarters in Casa Canals .
"Recovering the Tabacalera is a historical claim of the population, and a clear objective of the CUP, upon entering the municipal government team", Inés Solé
"This first activity of Medol in the Tabacalera was born with the desire that Module 6 become a cultural space of continuity and that it can host other activities from a contemporary perspective", explains the councilor Inés Solé, who understands that in this way «we will contribute to the dissemination of culture».
It should be remembered that Module 6 of the Tabacalera is known to have been occupied without authorization by the Oppida platform, 5 years ago now. The entity requested a self-managed space. Now, the City Council will work to prepare a plan of uses that determines what can be done in this warehouse.
trend in Europe
Yesterday morning, the symbolic opening of the facility took place and the journalists were able to see in the place the installations. The City Council has prepared the right wing of the Tabacalera, where the En Dansa cycle will take place. Until a few months ago, the inside of the equipment was full of dirt, with pigeons and droppings everywhere. Even now the windows are broken and the walls are full of graffiti, which gives it an industrial touch, very trendy in any European city.
The councilor made it clear yesterday that, before opening the doors of the venue, a security plan had been worked on in order to make the circulation of the public attending the dance sessions viable. La Tabacalera opens its doors after 17 years without activity. The city recovers a unique space.
