Solidarity swimming in Cambrils in favor of research on ALS

Yesterday the Swim for ELA Association was presented in Cambrils. The initiative, which has been officially established after more than two years of carrying out solidarity activities, has the objective of fighting amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – better known as ALS – through the celebration of solidarity events linked to open water swimming .

The date of the Swim for ELA race, organized by the entity, was revealed in the presentation. The 2023 edition will take place on April 29. As in previous editions, a 23-kilometre route will be covered between the Calafat Marina, in L'Ametlla de Mar, and the Cambrils Yacht Club. The association has the support of the Yacht Club and the Cambrils City Council. The consistories of L'Ametlla de Mar and Vandellós and L'Hospitalet de l'Infant also collaborate in the organization of the event. The beneficiaries of the funds raised are the Miquel Valls Catalan Foundation for ALS, the Luzón Foundation and the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL).

The association was born from the initiative of the groups Malalts d'Aigua and Upside Down Challenge. These two groups have been working together for years organizing and participating in swimming events for solidarity purposes. In 2021, the Cambrils Swim for ELA brought together 24 teams and more than a hundred swimmers in a solidarity day in which, in addition, activities were organized for all audiences at the Club Nàutic, as well as a final solidarity dinner.

"The objective", as explained by Merche Dalmau, president of the association, "is to find a solution for a very difficult disease". For this reason, from the association they appreciate the support of all those involved -volunteers, companies and institutions-, which is, according to Dalmau, "indispensable so that we can progress in this fight". Oliver Klein, mayor of Cambrils, spoke along the same lines, thanking the association for its work and showing his "support for any initiative that, in solidarity, works to find a cure."

Next appointment, in April

The next edition of Swim for ELA will be held on April 29. Jordi Cervera, secretary of the association, assures that "it is a key date, since it will be a Saturday and it will be one of the first tests of the open water swimming calendar". Therefore, the organizers expect a success of participation. To ensure control and quality in the event, participation will be limited to a maximum of 30 teams, with a maximum of six swimmers and one boat per team.

Cervera is confident that the registration will be completed, since it is a renowned event on the calendar and, in addition, "collaborating with charitable causes such as this is part of the way of being an athlete."

Ramón Vallverdú, president of the Club Nàutic, added that "a series of activities will be scheduled at the Club that will make the day a great party", as has happened in previous editions. Registration is expected to open in January 2023, also for the dinner that, once again, will take place after the event.

Once again, the Clos Galena winery will collaborate with the Secrets de Mar wines. These wines -white and red-, with the Priorat Qualified Designation of Origin, include a donation of one euro in favor of ELA for each bottle purchased.
