Salou closes a section of the Miramar promenade for five months due to the works of Barenys
The works of the new canalization of the Barenys ravine as it passes through Salou continue and from today they will face a decisive phase. Infraestructures de la Generalitat, the body that is executing the works, will now begin the channeling of the final section of the new mouth that will be on Ponent beach. This action, which is expected to last until the end of March, will require cutting the final section of the Miramar promenade between Barenys street and Venus square. As reported by the City Council, the cut will affect both vehicle and pedestrian traffic and the Local Police have already installed road signs with the alternatives of passage.
Thus, the vehicles that enter from Vilafortuny to Salou will have to turn off onto Calle E –the one that crosses the road and goes up to Camping Sangulí– to access all directions, while the residents of the Salut neighborhood will be able to enter through the C and Sol streets, which will remain open. On the other hand, those who circulate along the promenade from Barcelona street in the direction of Cambrils, will have to enter through Guillem de Claramunt street and Plaza de la Província to continue with the march.
The works to channel the ravine below the train track consist of installing four large prefabricated concrete caissons –which will be joined to an existing one–, which will channel the water that falls in episodes of rain in the section below the street. end of the ravine. In this case, the installation of the last rainwater outlet box to the sea will require the construction of a 30-metre stretch of promenade, which coincides with the line of buildings that was expropriated and demolished to make way for the new Barenys layout.
After installing the box, the grade in this part of the road will be somewhat higher, as is already the case at C Street. In addition, the project plans to replace all the pavements of the promenade and redevelop the space with the same appearance, although without the palm trees, which have already been felled and will not be replaced, since the concrete caisson will be below. The action, in addition, will force to relocate two light boxes and change the streetlights. If everything goes according to plan, the ride may reopen just before Easter 2023.
In the same way, it should be remembered that the project will serve so that Barenys Street reaches the promenade, with a new urbanization above the caisson area that will be made of cobblestones. The Barenys channeling work began last January and will last until the end of 2023. The works are being carried out by the Generalitat, with a total investment of 17 million euros, and should serve to improve the drainage of the ravine towards the sea and finish thus with the problems of flooding in the neighborhood of La Salut.
Earthworks begin at the Stadium
Above the railway line, work to build the new open-air Barenys canal is also progressing at a good pace. Last week, the first earthworks began in the area of the Municipal Stadium, which is affected by the new layout of the ravine, parallel to Barenys street. The dismantling of the sports facilities on the 7-a-side football field is well advanced and all the artificial turf has already been removed, in an operation that was completed in two days and carried out by the Salou City Council. Once dismantled, all the material will be stored so that it can be reused once the playing fields are relocated, right next to the future canal.
