A change of pipes to save 200,000 liters of water a day in Espluga de Francolí

The City Council of Espluga de Francolí will receive a subsidy from the Next Generation funds of half a million euros to be able to replace some four kilometers of pipes that exist in the Carreras urbanization.

The Councilor for Municipal Services, Xavier Rosell, explained that "it is necessary to change the materials of the pipes, which exist in this place, which are still made with asbestos cement". In some places, these substitutions have already been made, but there are still areas where they have not been possible.

The cost of all this change is 700,000 euros, with this subsidy financing more than 50% of the replacement. Rosell assured that now that they have confirmation that they will receive the money from Europe, they will draw up the executive project, and through the 2023 budget the item to carry out the works will be completed.

In principle, the writing will be done during the month of January and the works will begin, once it is approved, in the middle of next year, they have not wanted to specify dates, because they depend on all the processes that must be carried out.

The councilor acknowledged that "the draft must be reviewed, and adapted to current prices, although it is a draft that was not drawn up five years ago, it is recent."

However, they are aware that inflation has risen and that, therefore, this affects the cost of the work. However, they were calm, because they do not believe that it will be much higher than expected.

Municipal warehouses are currently at 40 percent capacity

With this arrangement, where they take advantage of changes that had already been made previously, they want to avoid at least 20% of the losses and leaks that exist in the urbanization. They expect this percentage to be higher and almost 30%.

The result of all this would be to save the population some 200m3 of water every day. In this way, several inconveniences suffered by the neighbors will be avoided, and it is a measure that is becoming more relevant, especially now, with the extreme drought that exists, although Rosell made it very clear that "it does not stop anything, because those things that depend on of meteorological phenomena cannot control them".

The action is parallel to that carried out with the branch of the Tarragona Water Consortium (CAT), explained the mayor, Josep Maria Vidal. It is an initiative to take the water that reaches Montblanc to Espluga.

The Councilor for Municipal Services stressed that the priority "is the water from Espluga de Francolí, but this can help in episodes of extreme drought like this year's", since external transport should not be carried out, and the cost would be lower.

Three more hours of water

Last August, different night water cuts began in Espluga de Francolí due to the great drought and the little rainfall that there has been. Throughout the month of October these cuts began at seven in the evening, but yesterday it was announced that they would be held later, starting at ten at night.

“We are aware that the inconvenience of water cuts is very great, and the intention is to minimize their effects on the population”, said Xavier Rosell. From the Consistory they want the inconvenience caused by all this to be minimal, and with these three hours of margin they give more time, especially for those people who arrive home later, or work in the afternoon.

The level of deposits at the moment is stable, the levels have recovered a little, they are at 40%. For this reason they have decided to try to delay the cuts. From the Consistory they recognized that "they do not know if they will be able to maintain this permanently, until they recover even more levels", or if they will have to change their schedule again in a few weeks because the stability that they have at the moment will have been lost.

The councilor and the mayor were concerned about the current climate situation, because "it does not seem that it has to change in the short term" and, therefore, the drought will continue.

They work with the intention of facilitating the daily routine of all people, and that this problem affects all the neighbors to a minimum. For this reason, they consider that the actions they are carrying out are important, and that they will become even more relevant as time goes by, and if there is another time of great drought.

These are episodes that will become more and more frequent if the effects caused by the climate change that we are already suffering are not minimized.
