The Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Garibashvili, today signed the application for the start of the special accession procedure and the recognition of his country as a candidate for entry into the European Union (EU).
“It is a historic day. I sign the request on behalf of the country”said the head of the Government before affixing his signature to the document in a ceremony broadcast live on television.
He added that this is an “important stage on Georgia’s path to the European Union.”
“For us a future in Europe is the only option. It is our strategic objectiveGaribashvili stressed.
He noted that Georgia It is historically a country that belongs to European culture and civilization.
Tbilisi has been encouraged to take this step after the Ukrainian president, Volodímir Zelensky, did it last Monday in order to stop the so-called “special military operation” ordered by the Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
Georgia, which has the bitter experience of the 2008 war against Russia and two separatist republics recognized by Moscow, thus seeking to shield their security and guarantee the support of the Twenty-seven.
Georgia signed in 2014 the Association Agreement with the EU, which includes the Free Trade Agreement, and in 2017 it achieved the liberalization of the visa regime with the European Union.
