The war in Ukraine is having effects in all areas, including culture. The Russian State Ballet has canceled the shows it planned to hold in Saragossa and Huesca at the end of March due to the closure of Spanish airspace to aircraft of that nationality and to the lack of permission to enter the company.
The Huesca Conference Center has announced this Wednesday the suspension of the ballet show ‘La Bella Durmiente’, scheduled for March 27 at the Carlos Saura auditorium. The promoter Global Showtimes Services, in charge of the tour in Spain, has sent a statement alleging that “for reasons of force majeure” have been forced to “cancel/postpone” the visit to Spain of Viaheheslav Gordeev’s Russian State Ballet, scheduled between March 9 and April 3. The reason is, he acknowledges, “the war between Russia and Ukraine.”
Something similar has happened in Zaragoza, where the City Council has withdrawn its performance from the Auditorium’s schedule, scheduled for the March 29 in the Mozart room.
The withdrawal comes after the decision made by the Deputy Mayor of Zaragoza and Municipal Councilor for Culture and Foreign Projection, Sarah Fernandez, in line with all actions and sanctions against the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine. In the next few days, buyers will be informed of the system for refunding the price of tickets, according to the Auditorium.
The Aeroflor flight with which the company planned to travel to Spain on March 9 has been canceled by airline due to airspace closure. To this is added the lack of permission “to date” for the ballet by the Spanish authorities for its entry into the country.
The promoter is negotiating with another state ballet company, “not belonging to the Russian Federation”, so that the shows can be replaced and carried out between the end of September and the beginning of October. The Palacio de Congresos de Huesca has guaranteed the refund of the amount of tickets purchased to date, automatically, whether they were taken at the box office or ‘online’.
The Russian State Ballet of Vyacheslav Mikhailovich Gordeev is a state company formed in 1984 under the direction of the ‘People’s Artist’ of the Soviet Union who gave it its name, one of the most outstanding first dancers of Bolshoi Theater of Moscow, and renowned choreographer.
