Miguel Induráin, star of the most international Aragón Bike Race in Calatayud

Calatayud and its cycling spots are counting down the hours to experience a few days of intense activity with the arrival of the Aragon Bike Racethe quintessential mountain bike event in the Community in the BTT modality and that this year it celebrates -from March 10 to 13- its tenth anniversary with a double milestone. On the one hand, acquires international categoryl with its inclusion in the International Cycling Union (UCI) and, on the other hand, among the prominent runners listed, it has the presence of the award-winning Navarrese cyclist Miguel Induráin.

Thus, the five-time winner of the Tour de France will be present in the city within the participation adapted to the weekend. It is something that was confirmed this Wednesday in the presentation of the meeting that took place in the press room of the Zaragoza Provincial Council, the mayor of Calatayud, José Manuel Aranda; the Councilor for Sports, Héctor Sarriá, and the technical director of the event, Javier Solana.

Aranda has highlighted the economic impact generated by an event of these dimensions in the town, especially by occupying the hotel beds in the region. “Calatayud has prepared itself to be a benchmark for sports tourism as a BTT destination, which today is one of the main tourist engines. This test gives us fundamental visibility and I am sure that thanks to the professionalism with which Aragón Bike Race and the Sports Area are facing its organization, the event and its international projection will have continuity in our city”, explained Aranda. The test will start on Thursday March 10 but the professional teams are established in Calatayud from Tuesday.

For the Councilor for Sports, Héctor Sarriá, the test it is “an opportunity to promote our MTB routes and the Far West Trails”. “We are sure that the participants from all over the world will be amazed by the layouts, the technical characteristics and the impressive views offered by the Sierra de Armantes”, added Sarriá.

It is the tenth edition of this event and the third in a row to be held in Calatayud. Its consolidation in the national calendar and its integration in the international one has motivated the inscriptions, which were closed last week after reaching the maximum quota of 700 runners. It is the most important mountain bike race in Aragon and one of the most outstanding in Spain. It allows professionals to start their season on a competitive and surprising track.” explained the test director, Javier Solana.

Among the more than 40 professional participants from other countries will be present world figures such as the Czech Jaroslav Kulhavy, Olympic champion in London 2012, Olympic silver in Rio de Janeiro 2016 and world champion. From Poland will come Krzysztof Lukasik, one of the ‘Top 20’ of the UCI world ranking.

Will be the Belgian Maxime Dony, rider in the ‘Top 50’ of the UCI ranking or Lejla Tanovic, who lands in Calatayud as part of her tour of European events, a regular on the podiums in XCM World Cups and ‘Top 10’ of the UCI ranking. Tanovic is expected to lead the female participation that will include other outstanding runners such as Eva Elbaile, Ana María Ivanov and Helena Isanta.
